Pearland is a city located in the southeastern part of the state of Texas, in the United States. The history of Pearland dates back to the mid-19th century when it was settled by farmers and ranchers. The name "Pearland" is believed to have originated from the many pear trees that once grew in the area.
The earliest known settlers of the area were the Makemie and Turner families who arrived in the mid-1850s. They were followed by other families who came to farm and ranch the fertile lands along Clear Creek and its tributaries. In 1870, a post office was established in the community, and the town was officially named "Mark Belt."
In 1893, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway was constructed through the area, which brought new settlers and economic growth. The town was renamed Pearland in 1894 after the abundant pear trees in the area. The arrival of the railroad made it easier for farmers to transport their crops to market, and many began to specialize in growing fruits, including pears, peaches, and figs.
In the early 1900s, Pearland became a center for dairy farming, and the city was incorporated in 1959. During the mid-20th century, the city experienced rapid growth, with the population increasing from just over 1,000 in the 1950s to more than 10,000 by the 1970s.
Today, Pearland is a thriving city with a diverse economy that includes healthcare, education, retail, and manufacturing.
